How to update firmware

Your PhatBox/Music Keg has firmware programmed inside of it. It has already been setup at the factory to work with your car stereo head unit.

PhatNoise periodically releases updates to the firmware in order to fix problems or to provide feature upgrades. A notice of firmware updates may appear on the PhatNoise website, or you may be contacted via the email address you registered with PhatNoise when you loaded your PhatNoise Music Manager Software onto your PC.

In the event of a firmware update, follow these steps.

Part I: At Your Computer Insert the DMS cartridge into the USB Cradle.

1. Launch the PhatNoise Music Manager by double-clicking the icon on your desktop. Press the Device button.

2. Click the text PhatNoise DMS and then press the GO button.

3. Press the Hardware Options button.

4.Please ensure the Installed Product is set to the PhatNoise product that you own.

5. Press the Start Wizard button to begin the update process.

6. The wizard will begin. Press Next to skip the introductory screen.

7. Press the Check for Updates from PhatNoise Website button to load the latest set of head unit firmware available for download. Note: if the Version number of the firmware package is higher than the version number in your Current Setup, it is newer firmware. Left click on the firmware package you want to download (there may be only one).

8. Press the Next button (A). The window will display information about this particular version of firmware(B).

9. Press the Next button one more time. This screen summarizes the options you have chosen. Press Update PhatNoise DMS when you are done, and the Firmware will be downloaded to your DMS Cartridge.

Make sure you are choosing the correct options. Reprogramming the PhatBox/Music Keg for an incorrect head unit may damage your system!

The wizard will close.

10. Now press the Save/Eject DMS button.

Part II: In Your Car

After completing the above steps, your DMS cartridge should be set to reprogram the PhatBox/Music Keg with the firmware you just downloaded. The PhatBox/Music Keg can now be updated using the following steps:

While your car radio is off, insert the DMS cartridge firmly into your PhatBox/Music Keg. Turn your ignition key to the ACCESSORY position so that your radio turns on. This causes the PhatBox/Music Keg to turn on and soon begin programming itself with the new firmware. Look at the lights on the front panel of the PhatBox/Music Keg; if the green light is blinking continuously, a couple times per second, then the programming is in progress. This will take about 7 minutes to complete.

Turn your ignition key back to the OFF position, and remove the ignition key -- this will cause your radio to turn off. Verify that the PhatBox/Music Keg's green light is still blinking.

Do not pull the cartridge out while the lights are blinking.

When the PhatBox/Music Keg is done reprogramming, all the PhatBox/Music Keg lights will turn off. Make sure the lights stay off for at least 10 seconds. Now turn your ignition key to the ACCESSORY position, turning on the radio.
  • (For Kenwood car stereos only) Press the RESET button on your car stereo.
  • Press the Source button on your car stereo to select CD changer mode -- your car stereo should now recognize the PhatBox/Music Keg with its new firmware.

  •   For Volkswagen/Audi car stereos only: After updating firmware, the PhatBox will need to be configured to a specific Volkswagen/Audi stereo model. Please see the Radio Setup Guide (1.7MB) for configuration instructions.
